WE ARE LIVE!
It all started four years ago, when my friend introduced me to a native American story based on a series of novels written by David & Aimee Thurlo entitled “Second Sunrise,” “Pale Death,” “Blood Retribution,” and “Surrogate Evil”.
I loved the stories that were being told and immediately began to adapt the first book one into a screenplay. Everyone involved is enthusiastic about the film and speak of it with great passion. I am surrounded with accomplished talent and crew. My goal is to break the glass ceiling with this first film SECOND SUNRISE.
Never before has there been an American Indian feature that has the opportunity to break through at the box office.
Our production company Red Nation Films, a division of The Romero Company (An Indigenous Film Studio) based in Los Angeles will be the first native production company to release four films back to back with this book series.
We can build a bankable market, and create careers for Native American actors, directors and producers with one film every 2-3 years, and this feature film franchise will spearhead this endeavor at a major industry level.
For over 38 years I have been directing, producing and acting in the entertainment industry. I have been fulfilling this dream and setting goals – to keep the American Indian at the forefront of the entertainment industry and mainstream audiences worldwide.
My hope is that this feature film saga and this first feature SECOND SUNRISE, will put native image in a positive marketable light. It will serve to create native careers at a president level, educate the nation and shift the collective consciousness toward recognizing our indigenous talent and communities.
Imagine going to the theatres across the country and experiencing the storytelling of contemporary Native America at a level more successful than the Twilight Saga. Imagine going into books stores such as Barnes & Noble and seeing and purchasing with our native brand, imagine having native movie stars in mainstream society, imagine giving our native youth positives images of themselves.
Red Nation Films is making all this happen and YOU can be apart of it.
ABOUT Joanelle Romero
I am proud to be an American Indian who has intimate knowledge of American Indian culture, values, and belief systems. I was raised in the traditional culture of the American Indian and participate in various ceremonial customs. I believe SECOND SUNRISE; this film would raise the American Indian to unprecedented levels with authenticity never shown before. I am a director, producer, and writer with an intrinsic knowledge of native traditions, culture, and lore.
Being an accomplished filmmaker, I have the experience and background to direct a film that will elevate the status of “native” and how it is perceived in mainstream society through the medium of cinema. I can reveal some of the extraordinary history and culture that permeates the world of the American Indian.
At Red Nation Films, our focus is on introducing more native content to the industry and audiences worldwide through our various events and film festivals. My documentary, “American Holocaust: When It’s All Over I’ll Still Be Indian “, has won the Armin T. Wegner Humanitarian Award in 2005 for the focus and attention that was placed on the comparison between Nazi Germany and the United States’ termination policy towards ethnic groups that were found to be undesirable or stood in the way of progress. My film was also up for Oscar Consideration and made the Academy’s Documentary Short List.

A FILM BY JOANELLE ROMERO
A case of plutonium brings a Navajo nightwalker (vampire) and a no- onsense FBI agent together. While deadly shapeshifters stalk them, Lee Nez and his beautiful partner must stop the power-mad Nazi who created him.
New Mexico State Police Officer Lee Nez is a nightwalker, a Navajo vampire. Thanks to the quick work of a Navajo shaman, Lee can walk about in the day and prefers his blood refrigerated-but his vampire nature makes him a magnet for other supernatural entities.
Take his current cases. Lee suspects that the vampire who created him during World War II is back in the US, searching for a cache of stolen plutonium. And Lee’s being stalked by the remnants of a pack of shape shifters/skinwalkers; Navajo shape shifters who are literally out for his blood. When the FBI shows up, in the person of the very attractive Diane Lopez, Lee’s problems only increase. He can’t tell Diane that the case she’s looking into involves shape shifters or that it’s his supernatural abilities that make him such a great cop. And teaming up with Lee could be very hazardous to her health.
Sixty years ago New Mexico patrolman Lee Nez and his partner foiled the hijacking of an American military convoy transporting nuclear material. At the end of the firefight, all of the soldiers and Lee’s partner were dead-and Lee’s life was forever transformed.
Now a nightwalker, the Navajo equivalent of a vampire; Lee lives with one foot in the human world and one in a world full of monsters. In 2002, Lee Nez is a cop again, now known as Leonard Hawk. His more-than-human abilities have made him the target of murderous Navajo witches (shape shifters) who want his powers for themselves. When cool, capable FBI agent Diane Lopez questions Lee about an incident on the Navajo Reservation, Lee can’t tell her then the people he killed that night were shape shifters out for his blood.
Lee and Diane are attacked by a wolf pack. Diane is stunned when the wolf she shoots shapeshifts into a woman before dying. On the run, Lee tells Diane of his true nature and that he is convinced the vampire who made him one of the undead has returned to New Mexico in the guise of German Air Force pilot Wolfgang Muller. Muller has been much too close to the place where Lee hid the plutonium six decades ago, a trap for the vampire, set with the inhuman patience of a nightwalker.
Using police and FBI resources as well as Navajo healing magic and his own supernatural powers; Lee and Diane hunt for Muller and his undead offspring. Muller was to sell the nuclear material to the highest bidder, what does he care if some humans blow up some other humans, as long as he can find fresh sources of blood? When Muller takes Diane captive, Lee swears he won’t lose another partner to the vampire’s evil.
Second Sunrise is the first in a series of novels featuring Lee Nez, an undead hero who lives in a world where magic and monsters are all too real. The Thurlos’ skill at evoking of Southwestern settings and Navajo philosophies and lifestyles combines with their ability to create strong plots and solid characters in this fast-paced, action-filled story of supernatural suspense.
CAST & CHARACTERS
Yes, there have been past and very current vampire films, however my film is much more than a film about vampires and blood. The lead character Lee Nez is a Navajo vampire but can function during the day.
Our film transports the characters into a high concept cross-genre setting. There are vampires, shape shifters, medicine men, blood, love, cultural history and the beauty of the hot desert land itself imbuing the whole with its own unique character.
The music plays a big part in our film, the fact that the music of films often has powerful effects on its audience is undisputed. The music score will act as a character in our film.
Our protagonists are real and relatable, we care about them. When seeing them we feel for them in that, we see ourselves, the good, the bad the ugly.
Red Nation Films is a Production Company established to develop and produce high-quality feature films that entertain, delight and inspire, founded by award-winning industry professional filmmaker Joanelle Romero.
Romero’s goal is to identify and create commercially viable projects with compelling story lines from a native perspective.
“Second Sunrise” will appeal to all audiences who enjoy a combination of action, drama and romance as much as they do stories involving vampires, shapeshifers, native cultures and spirituality.
“Second Sunrise” is a film that transcends ethnicity and has the opportunity to successfully infiltrate the global marketplace. A little known fact is that today the combined numbers of American Indians Mexican Indians and Canadian Indians are greater than any other indigenous people which translate to more eyes on the screen. It could be said that “Second Sunrise is the next big thing even though that ‘thing’ is over thousands of years old.
We are over-joyed to offer exciting “reward” items. We hope you’ll be as pleased as we are with these unique, attractive acknowledgements of your support. We’ll keep you updated with more “reward” items as the campaign moves forward as well as updates everyday!
WHY make this film?
There are many reasons for this film to be made and understanding the power that film has to bring us together, to inspire, to motivate, and open our eyes to things we have not seen or experienced before is one of them. I am passionate about the magic of film and the film making process.
I grew up on the MGM lot with my mom being an actress in many Elvis Presley films. I learned and watched the very best. Dennis Hopper was once my legal guardian and I grew up in the industry experiencing the art of film making.
This film is in the beauty of native people and culture and the ability to take advantage of the extraordinarily talented Native American actors and actresses. The story involves vampires and shapeshifters but at its basest level it’s about love and spirituality. The core of this film penetrates deep into the Psyche of the human condition and while the difference between vampire and shape shifters is fantasy it is very real and embedded in native folklore. The fact that shape shifters do exist scare many. The suspense and mystery of these shape shifters will take you on a ride like never before, while examining what is happening today on mother earth.
While we have the Twilight Saga of movies that portrayed pieces of indigenous folklore, “Second Sunrise” is poised to expand beyond bits and pieces to really travel inside the reality of native traditions, without exposing the true spirituality that lies within native customs, as those are sacred and still must be protected. What I can do is portray the vampires and shapeshifters in the real vein of how those are viewed within native societies and bring that to the big screen in ways that are unexpected and actually even scary.
The vision for “Second Sunrise” is to bring a new edge and awareness to the horror film genre’ while producing a great story with suspense, elements of the supernatural and even a love interest that lends itself to credibility and leaving the audience wanting more. With native music and Musicians as a central overall theme to the movie will create opportunities for showcasing talent and produce an additional source of revenue, while adding authenticity to the film.
I will bring mystery, reveal the good and bad of the human condition and provide the suspense that always beats at the heart of every good thriller.
